Synopsis

The show goes back to in the early 1930s just prior to the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, spot a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they are working. Rather than allow the mobster to make them a target, the musicians go on the run.

They put on women’s clothing and, though they're cross-dressing, are able to join a touring all-women swing big band called Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopators. While touring, the two fall in love with the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They keep their true identities protected, but they both hope to fall in love with Sugar Kane.

Whilst touring, romances form that could serve to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The gangsters and the FBI get involved, recognizing Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines. Which further complicating the groups touring to performances and its ability to find new investors.

Jerry, now identifying as Daphne, falls falls for an investor, leading to a marriage proposal. They can't keep their identities hidden forever, but none of the characters let that affect their feelings for each other. As Prohibition ends, everyone is able to move on with their new lives.

Show origins

This beloved musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It collected 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. It also won Best Costumes and Best Choreography. Ensuring you’ll enjoy the visual portions of the show as much as the emotional music and lyrics. This musical follows the entertaining story told in the 1959 movie by the same name. The film starred the stunning Marilyn Monroe, making it incredibly popular at the time. The new musical retells this beloved story from the movie with a twist while protecting the vintage comedy and musical styles from the film.

Production History

Some Like It Hot had its opening night at the Shubert Theater on Broadway in late 2022. Its last performance was near the end of 2023. The shows North American tour kicked off in the back half of 2024 and continues today. You now can experience the show in your vintage theater in Greensboro.
