More than 40 years ago, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the initial musical script for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the matching name, the plot of Les Mis was adapted and turned into a musical as a show only sung from start to finish, which was monumental in that time period.
Following a very short run in Paris, France, there was obviously a growing demand to create an English version, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the soundtrack, he instantly fell in love and decided to produce an English version hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the English song numbers. The English production of the musical only debuted with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and positive reviews from critics, the musical rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and superior venue, and was performed for 19 years. Les Mis then relocated once more to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until present day. Adding together all its productions since its inception four decades ago, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running stage play of all time.
With 37 years in London on its own and not even counting its tours in international countries, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is undeniable that Les Mis continues to be amazing in the viewpoint of the musical’s audiences. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and unrequited love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the revealed emotion behind the mask of each character and act performed. The musical has become so famous that the show has been converted to motion pictures several times and received very positively even on another platform.
This upcoming January’s season of Les Mis carries it to North Carolina, where the show will be performed on Friday 9th January 2026, in Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts, Greensboro. For a sung-through musical like Les Misérables, locals can agree that Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts is the greatest venue due to its sound design and acoustics, in addition to a spacious constructed stage to hold the play.
