Ever since Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, alongside playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, created what would be their very last masterpiece, ‘The Sound Of Music’ became one of the world’s most adored stage productions.
No musical can match ‘The Sound Of Music’ when it comes to the large amount of much adored hits it contains; a production that can remain as relevant and treasured for nearly seven decades as ‘The Sound Of Music’ does not exist; and a tale as heart-warming, yet filled with major social issues, is yet to be created.
No other musical has been revived as many times, had more performances around the world, and has been received with as much triumph as ‘The Sound Of Music’. Since its premiere in 1959, it has received five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Special Award, alongside many nominations. ‘The Sound Of Music’ has also been adapted into a tremendously successful film featuring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, still being enjoyed to this day.
‘The Sound Of Music’, inspired by Maria von Trapp’s ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, follows the tale of Maria, a free-spirited nun, who takes on the massive task as governess for Captain Georg von Trapp’s seven children, and brings much love, happiness, and of course, music, back to the family. The family is faced with many troubles - from the imminent Nazi-threat brought about by the Anschluss to the inevitable romance between Captain von Trapp - an engaged-to-be-married man, and Maria, who vowed to remain a nun.
