In Beetlejuice, the main character, Betelgeuse, is a bio-exorcist demon who is fixated with returning to the world of the living. The recently deceased will be allowed to leave if they can convince a living person to utter their name three times. His properly planned strategy quickly falls through after he finds out that one of the new housemates is the sassy and sneaky Lydia.
She puts Betelgeuse through a series of tests that he could never have expected and wins over the hearts of the Maitlands in the process. Hi jinks ensue, as this wild and crazy bunch of misfits attempts to find happiness and independence together, whether dead or alive.
